Semiotics in Photography
What is a semiotic?
Semiotics are the study of signs, words, body language etc. that make the viewer come to a conclusion (a semantic). The semantic of the semiotic simply means the meaning. Each semiotic has a denotation and a connotation, the denotation of a semiotic is what the viewer actually sees. For example, they could see a rose, and the through the act of the semiotics the viewer creates a connotation in their mind. As for in they saw a rose, they may think of love and emotion.
Colors in photography
Some colors stand out more than others, for example, it is scientifically proven that red stands out to the human eye more than any other color. This is why most companies use red in their advertisements to make the advert stand out to their audience and target audience.

Colors differ in different cultures, red in China is lucky but in English we would think as it as love or danger.
Text in photography
Text is used in all sorts of photography, but I have based my research on text that is used in advertisements as that is what I will need to know for this unit, where I will create an advertisement of my own.

Different texts are used for different advertisement, as they need to fit the genre of what the advert is advertising. For example, a business advert for a bank may use very neat and simple writing so that it is easy to understand for their target audience. However, an advertisement for a new clothing range may use a more fashionable text, which is more cool and slick to fit with the genre of the advertisement.
Lighting in photography
The lighting of photograph is arguable the most important part, as it creates everything the viewer sees and how they see it. Light entering the frame from an angle should fit the genre of the image, as this light will be very significant to the viewer. Shadows can be very powerful in photography, and some the audience will capture connotations from the lighting of an image to decide whether it is a 'good' light or a 'bad' light and this signifies how they see the person/objects in the image.

Here, I have taken some images which I found off the internet of rugby players. As you can tell straight away, the lighting used in these image is very strong and powerful, just like the rugby players themselves. Or is that so? The back light used in the first image makes an almost light/white line around the player, which creates attention towards his arms and physic. This is to create the effect that the rugby player is bigger than he actually is. However, in the bottom picture there is just the picture of a rugby players head with the rugby ball, yet the light/white line in still around the body of the player and the rugby ball. This is to focus all attention on the player and the object, to express that he is a rugby player and that is all his mind is focused on, especially at this certain time.
